Focus of Next Paper / Yoshino Excerpts

Out of the potential words provided for our next paper as a topic, I am going to choose to write about authenticity. I value real, honest interactions over anything else and know that it will be something I could also add my own caveats for. Everyone has dealt with liars and fake friends before and for me there is nothing I can’t stand than a person who changes their personality just to please others. Be yourself, and your people will find you. If they don’t, then look at you flaws, we all have them, and try to figure out why others are would rather not be around you. If they have a valid reason you can try talking to them about it or if it is a character flaw then fix it. The excerpts from Yoshino speak a lot about authenticity and being true to oneself, but it is also important to be open to change. He defines it as, “our common human wish to express ourselves without being impeded by unreasoning demands for conformity,” (Yoshino). This “False Self” that he talks about is something that many people have crafted as a way to be accepted by those who don’t appreciate them as they are. While there are many serious reasons as to why two people may dislike each other unless the other is passing as somebody they aren’t truly but those issues are typically with the close-mindedness of one party. We need to learn as a society to accept one another and acknowledge that not everyone has to perfectly fit within categories.
