Self Definition 9/30/20

The two articles that I read were, “Missouri Cop Who Says He Was Told ‘Tone Down Your Gayness’ Wins Discrimination Case” written by Rachel Treisman and “A Muslim soldier says her command sergeant major forced her to remove her hijab” authored by Meghann Myers. Both articles focused on issues within governmental organizations that were caused by the higher ups believing that they were untouchable. In the Missouri police officer’s case the discrimination was sexual orientation based. A colleague at the office attempted to give the plaintiff some “advice” abut how to have a better chance at receiving the promotion for an opening at work by telling the officer that they needed to “tone down their gayness”. This recommendation, if followed by the person, would have had them assimilate into the community and cover their true identity. The man wasn’t being told to completely hide his sexual orientation but instead sideline it as a key trait even though it was for him. “It was devastating to hear. We had never spoken of my sexuality before, and I thought he was just trying to be helpful to me and looking out for my best interest in the promotional process,” (Wildhaber). According to Wildhaber, the plaintiff, he believed that he has been denied up to 23 positions just due to his orientation. In the end the jury secured nearly 20 million dollars based off of damages for him. Since then one of the 5 police chairmen have resigned and more are being investigated for their own involvement. The Muslim who was forced to publicly remove her hijab had her religious freedoms violated and also won her case, but at the cost of her being forced to go against her beliefs. Both of these articles showed that even though the law provides protection from racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual orientation based discrimination, it will always find a way to push through if the person is covering or not. Society wants us all to conform to the same image, or assimilate outsiders into it as a solution instead of learning to accept them.

  1. When you mentioned “sideline” this Missouri man’s gayness in order to gain a better job title reminds me of the word “covering.” These articles are good examples of how a person can be discriminated against even in professional environments. I agree with your last statement about how “society wants us all to conform to the same image.” This reminds me of my article about how women specifically mothers have to hide the fact they have children in order to fit in. Society likes to make anything that is different from the white male status a negative thing.
